About Event

Toronto has always been a city of immigrants. We think of ourselves as a welcoming city, open to people, their cultures, and their cuisines from every corner of the earth. Is this perception true, and has it always been this way?

This tour is about a small neighborhood that defined the immigrant experience in Toronto for a century. Known as "The Ward", this small village was the rendezvous point for generations of Jewish, Chinese, Caribbean, Eastern European, and African-American newcomers to this city.

Over time, The Ward became designated as a "slum". Despite much protest and community resistance, residents were displaced from their homes, and the area's original Chinatown was destroyed in order to build City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square.

Together will walk The Ward, and see how the ghosts of the past loom large over our city.

Duration: 3hrs

Starting Location: The Toronto Sign in Nathan Phillips Square. We will begin on the side of the sign that faces City Hall.

Ending Location: TBD

Price: This tour operates on a pay-what-you-can basis. There is a $2 booking fee to secure your spot on the tour. At the end of the tour, you can pay whatever you feel the tour was worth (cash or card both accepted). Most guests choose to pay between $25 - $40 per person.
